The WTL is delivering postcards throughout the district the weekend of April 28th and 29th regarding the largest portion of the budget: teacher salaries and benefits. Read the postcard here.
It has been brought to our attention that WASB's figures used in the comparison do not include lane change increases. In a conversation with Barry Forbes (the author of the report) from Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Mr. Forbes verified that after the 2001 change in state law, lane change figures were not included. Mr. Forbes did state that traditionally (prior to 2001) lane changes would account for less than 1/2 of 1%. Mr. Forbes also said he would put the statement in writing until he realized I was not a school board member at which point the conversation terminated rather abruptly. Here is the information from WASB's website. Please note that it does state 'average salary increase per teacher' and further down in the notes 'average salary includes only schedule salary and longevity pay. Percentage increase based on prior year average.' A salary schedule includes both lane and step changes. In WASB's statistics, it was not stated anywhere that lane changes were not included.
We stand by our statement that Waukesha is giving higher than average increases in salaries due to the removal of time from the salary schedule--a situation that was mutually agreed up by the Waukesha School Board and the EAW.
