The City of Waukesha was recently notified that they would not be receiving a $500,000 federal grant to staff a the new fire station being built by Meadowbrook Road. There is already work being done near Oliver Field. The 2008 budget contains some money for the staffing but not the total amount necessary. Not one city council member nor the mayor should pretend to be suprised nor should they whine about making budget cuts to make ends meet. Even the 2008 budget transmittal summary defined the problem. Ignorance isn't bliss in this case, it is incompetence.

The Mayor gave his State of the City address. Other than the back slapping Mayor Larry did, it was a pretty meatless speech. No mention of the high taxes, the high debt, etc. Yes, Waukesha's retail business is growing--which one would expect with the growth the city has experienced over the last few decades. Condos are multiplying and old areas are being rebuilt. But the most fun in this speech begins at the end of page 11. Waukesha's very own cemetary has gone green with biodegradible caskets that bodies don't need to be embalmed to be buried this way. Waukesha is the cutting edge and will be showing its commitment to going GREEN.

City of Waukesha #1 Again! |

... in property taxes for Waukesha County. Out of 111 taxing districts, the City of Waukesha residents will pay the most. A City of Waukesha home with a fair market value of $281,600 will pay $4,985.96 in property taxes. That's over $300 more than the 2nd most tax burdened municipality in the County.
In the past, the highest taxed community in Waukesha County was still lower than the lowest taxed in Milwaukee County. However, this changed this year because of the high rate of growth in the City of Waukesha tax levy. Almost mockingly, Mayor Nelson chose to boast on this years property tax letter stating that Waukesha would only have been the 29th out of 30 Milwaukee municipalities. Just imagine how high Waukesha would be if it also had the out-of-control MATC board, a problem-ridden MMSD, and a county government trying to recover from a pension scandal.

Walmart doesn't want your tax dollars for their development. What a twist from some of the more recent ones that the city has approved.

Alderperson Cummings made a lot of sense when the Park and Planning Commission wanted to spend millions on a recreation center. Her point--control city borrowing and maximize usage of taxpayer funded facilities that the school district has. Maybe, sometime in our lifetime, the city and the school district will begin to work together on behalf of taxpayers.
