Waukesha Freeman article - 2007/05/13 11:13 I just recently saw a copy of the April 28 article in the Waukesha Freeman regarding the students that are organizing in opposition to the budget cuts that plague the school district.

I must admit that I was a touch disappointed with the representation of the WTL in that article. Is it the position of the League that these student groups are merely pawns of the demagoguery exhibited by other groups, such as Project ABC or WAES?

These students have to see firsthand the effects of the state's bungled regulations. They walk to their classes each day wondering if their favorite teachers will have a job the next year, if the students who will enter the schools in the next few years will even have the option to take the classes that have helped them the most and taught them character, integrity, how to think, and how to live in the world at large. I think that these students deserve not to be written off or dismissed as they seem to have been, but rather to be applauded for their desires to see this problem fixed, and to receive all the help that any other group commited to the well-being of the community can give them in this respect.

I, personally, think that the solution to this problem can't be found until sufficient political pressure is brought to bear on Madison so that they fix the laws and own up to the broken promises that allowed this situation to arise in the first place. This cannot happen if the people in this city are too busy sniping at each other to present any sort of unified and professional statement, rather than the usually-civil bickering that parties on both sides of the issue fall to now.
